Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and most well-known crime prevention concepts in the United States, with roots dating back to colonial times. Neighborhood Watch began to grow in the 1960s and became a national program in 1972. Watch groups make their communities better places to live by looking out for suspicious activity in their neighborhood and reporting that activity to law enforcement.
USA on Watch was organized in 2002 to help Neighborhood Watch programs expand their role to enhance homeland security in neighborhoods and communities.
You can join a local watch or start your own by following these steps:
- Recruit and organize as many neighbors as possible
- Contact your local law enforcement agency and schedule a meeting
- Discuss community concerns and develop an action plan
- Hold regular meetings and training
- Implement a phone tree and take action steps
